Favorites fall

 
BEIJING – Lolo Jones collapsed onto her knees, dropped her head and pounded the track with her right fist three times. She looked up and watched the replay.

The video scoreboard in National Stadium showed what Jones will never forget: leading the 100-meter hurdles with only two hurdles left to clear, 19 meters to go and the illusion that the Olympics reward those who deserve it most.

In an instant, she clipped the ninth hurdle with her right foot. Knocked off stride, she regained her balance, but it was too late. Too late for Lolo Jones. Too late for Sanya Richards. Too late for the pair of American favorites whose night was not supposed to end in tears.

Just 20 minutes before Jones collapsed onto her knees and tears streaked down her face, Richards appeared on her way to victory in the 400 meters. She led the pack with 80 meters to go. Suddenly, her stride slowed. Her lead shrunk. Two runners passed her before Richards crossed the finish line with a look of utter disbelief.

The 2008 Summer Olympics will be held in Beijing, China. The emblem for Olympics 2008, entitled as the "Dancing Beijing", was first displayed in August 2003, in a ceremony attended by about 2000 people at Qi’niandian, the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests in Beijing’s Temple of Heaven. The emblem comprises a red seal with a calligraphic word for “jing”, the national capital, that weaves elements of traditional Chinese society with athletic features. The open arms of the calligraphic word represent the invitation of China to the world to share its culture. As a whole the “Dancing Beijing” represents mutual trust and an expression of self confidence, standing for the solemn yet sacred promise that Beijing has made to the world and humanity.

The 2008 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, is a major international multi-sport event which is being celebrated in Beijing, People’s Republic of China from August 8 to August 24, 2008 and followed by the 2008 Summer Paralympics from September 6 to September 17. 10,500 athletes are expected to compete in 302 events in 28 sports, one event more than was on the schedule of the 2004 games. The 2008 Beijing Olympics will also mark the third time that Olympic events will have been held in the territories of two different National Olympic Committees (NOC), with the equestrian events to be held in Hong Kong.
